Leanring Mentors

What is a Learning Mentor?

Learning Mentors support, motivate and challenge pupils who may be finding school tricky. We help pupils overcome barriers to learning caused by social, emotional and behavioural problems.

Our work may include:

  • Liaising with staff to identify learners who would benefit from mentoring
  • Helping children who are finding school tricky to overcome any barriers to learning
  • Implementing strategies and supporting learners in self-esteem and confidence-building activities
  • Listening to and helping learners resolve a range of issues
  • Drawing up agreed action plans with learners, outlining the aims of the mentoring, and monitoring their progress
  • Monitoring attendance and punctuality of learners
  • Running social/friendship and empowerment group sessions at school
  • Advising parents on behaviour strategies
  • Providing Thrive assessments for identified children
  • Organising drop-in 'offload' sessions for learners, where they can talk about a particular issue
  • Providing group activities such as anger management classes
  • Helping with transition activities KS2-KS3,for learners moving to secondary schools
  • Liaising with the Home-School Link Worker
  • Acting as a role model

We run a lunchtime drop-in session for any child who needs extra support. They can self-refer if they find something tricky or just want to talk over a problem. If you would like any further information, please feel free to make an appointment with the Mentor by contacting the school office.

We also run lunchtime social/friendship groups which have proved to be very popular!
