Year 3

Autumn

Greetings and the Classroom

Pupils will learn how to greet people, begin to learn some of the colours and learn the names of some classroom objects.

 

Colours, Emotions and Numbers

Pupils will learn how to count to ten, learn more colour names, and discover words used to describe their emotions.

Spring

Introductions and Questions

Pupils will learn how to say their name and age, how to describe their feelings and ask and answer questions.

 

Working Together

Pupils will learn how to use please and thank you correctly, how to write sentences using known verbs and nouns, and how to identify verbs in sentences.

Summer

Playing Together

Pupils will learn the French words for different sports, when to use faire and when to use jouer, how and when to use the prepositions au, à, la or à l' and how to plan, rehearse and perform a short play.

 

Eating Together

Pupils will learn the verbs manger, to eat and boire, to drink. They will learn how to read a simple menu card.

Year 4

Autumn

The Calendar

Pupils will learn the days of the week, the months of the year and numbers to twenty.

 

Colours, Emotions and Numbers

Pupils will learn how to use numbers from one to twenty to count classroom objects, how to use colours to describe nouns, how to write colours in the first and second person singular, and how to present themselves.

Spring

Items From Daily Life

Pupils will learn how to identify verbs in the first and second person in sentences and how to read sentences containing the negative form and new nouns.

 

Learning Together

Pupils will learn how to describe their school day and the French words for some of the subjects taught in school.

Summer

The Natural World

Pupils will learn feminine and masculine animal nouns, the order of nouns and adjectives in a sentence, how to describe a simple setting using taught nouns, adjectives and numbers.

 

Celebration

Pupils will learn how to use French verbs when talking or writing about celebrations, French nouns associated with celebrations, and how to use C'est..., It is... and Ce n'est pas..., It isn't... when describing and comparing celebrations.

Year 5

Autumn

Local Places

Pupils will learn places in a town, directions and compass points.

 

Emotions and Numbers

Pupils will learn numbers up to 100, seven different emotions and the feminine and masculine forms of several adjectives.

Spring

Friends and Family

Pupils will learn how to use le, la, l' and les, how to use auxiliary verbs and names of family members.

 

Working Together

Pupils will learn some professions, how to use the feminine and masculine forms of specific professions and how to use qui in a relative clause.

Summer

Playing Together

Pupils will learn the names of different sports, the names of different hobbies and a variety of verbs.

 

Eating Together

Pupils will learn the position of colour and size adjectives in sentences written in French and how to read aloud a simple recipe card and identify the verbs.

Year 6

Autumn

Where I Live

Pupils will learn to use the verbs habiter and etre, how to describe the position of places, the names of rooms found in a house and how to read descriptions in the context of a house.

 

Emotions and Numbers

Pupils will learn ordinal numbers (1st to 5th), the singular first and second person and the negative form using ne ... pas.

Spring

Items From Daily Life

Pupils will learn the negative form of verbs and adjectives, using ne ... pas.

 

Learning Together

Pupils will learn how schools are organised in France, how to read a school timetable, the French names for a range of subjects taught in schools and the French names for items commony used in schools.

Summer

The Natural World

Pupils will learn animal and plant nouns, the order of nouns and adjectives in a sentence and how to describe a simple setting using taught nouns, adjectives and numbers.

 

Visiting France

Pupils will learn vocabulary relating to modes of transport and locations, the relative clause 'qui', and vocabulary relating to travel.
